> Crisi economica

How do you spell “Crisis”?

      5:00 pm – 7:00 pm

A transnational journey to the heart of the 14 cities participating in the Transeuropa Festival, connected by the millennia-old art of storytelling.

    7. Camminata Transeuropea
      6:00 pm – 8:00 pm

Transnational walk, opening the festival simultaneously in all the festival cities.

      6:00 pm – 7:00 pm

The storyteller Giacomo Passalacqua will displace the participants in time and space to other contemporary and multicultural cities through stories related to the migratory experience that symbolize in some way the change of our European societies.

    10. Otvorenie festivalu: Street gallery na zabudnutých miestach
      6:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Opening walk of the festival will bring young artists’ exhibition on the streets of the Bratislava city centre. ‘Multiculturalism in the city’ is the common topic and artistic works will thematically tackle different stories of multiculturalism from other festival cities. In cooperation with Generácia ´89. Afterwards, everyone is cordially invited to come to the Transeuropa party in KC Dunaj starting at 9.00 pm.

Projekt „Verejné galérie“ sa formou priamej realizácie umeleckých aktivít v zanedbaných a neudržiavaných avšak veľmi frekventovaných lokalitách mestského verejného priestoru snaží komunikovať s ľuďmi, konfrontovať kompetentných úradníkov a vyvolať verejnú diskusiu v dôležitých otázkach mesta, štátu a občianskej spoločnosti.

-7.20pm to 8pm (and later if you wish): Drinks with our friend of the Young European Movement London to celebrate together Europe Day

The Transeuropa Festival opens on the 9th of May with a transnational event – a common gesture – simple and powerful at the same time: a walk taking place simultaneously in all the Festival cities.

The act of walking itself, simple and ordinary as it is, is the prime way to place one’s body in space, to link effectively with the public space of the city, taking direct contact with the urban fabric. To use De Certeau’s words, “it is in the act of walking that persons write and rewrite the city as their space”. Through these trajectories the city takes shape, as a crossroads of moving beings. When enacted collectively (in a demonstration, or in a parade), walking becomes a powerful means to transform the surrounding space, to appropriate it and re-signify it. Walking collectively in many different European cities, we will create a transnational common space through a critical, political and creative gesture. The movements of the bodies, all together, will produce a set of trajectories and also a form of discourse – a discourse about the city, about the urban experience, about Europe itself.

The Transeuropa Festival opening is not a set of separate walks, but a unique event spread across the continent, creating a complex map which links all the cities. As with any map, this map is built starting from a specific perspective, a lens to read the European urban landscape: the one provided by the transnational networks of migrants, which produce new identities, new spaces, new and varying (de)localizations. Our map is to explore the cultural diversity and the multiple movements of the contemporary cities, investigating how the European space is enriched by it being diverse and multicultural.

On the ‘official’ Day of Europe, we want to tell another story of Europe – a plural, complex Europe – which has to recognize its own diversity.

The Transnational walk combines a route in Sofia with stories from other European cities and, thus, opens up the local space to the cultural diversity in EU, showing that dialogue is possible on different levels and in various contexts.

    2. Quali alternative ai CIE? Alternative e proposte
      1:30 pm – 7:00 pm

Debate on alternatives to administrative detention of migrants.

Debate between a group of Chinese and European artists and curators, focused on the possibility of finding spaces for cultural and artistic experimentations and comparing the situations of the two continents.

      7:30 pm – 9:00 pm

People in Arab countries got mobilized against dictatorship; European citizens demonstrated against austerity measures. Meanwhile, has democracy become stronger?

“A baby thrown in the air”

Imen Yacoubi is a young Tunisian activist.

She teaches English at university and wrote a few articles published in English magazines.

      EA//
Do you consider the Tunisian revolution to be a success?

      IY//
People are looking for quick answers but it’s difficult to judge at this moment. It’s going to be even difficult to judge one or two years after the revolution. Nevertheless, I cannot really say that it has been a success so far. The only achievement that I can speak about is the freedom of expression that has really become available. I cannot say it has achieved its objectives concerning social justice, democracy and that we reached a balanced political system. But those principles, those ideals need to proceed, to evolve out of something because Tunisia is a country new to democracy.
I can remember the revolution as a very emotional moment which gathered different sorts of emotion, like anger, like hope, like the feeling of being part of something bigger. People start to loose faith in that. So I think whether the revolution will be a success or not depends on the ability of the Tunisians to keep in touch with that moment when they felt part of something bigger.

      EA//
Do you think that this feeling of being part of something bigger is vanishing now?

      IY//
It’s very simply the feeling of being a citizen, of trusting others, of trusting your fellow, your neighbor, your friend. This is something that a political system can totally spoil. After the fall of Zine el Abedine ben Ali, there was an explosion of ideologies, of political parties. Some of them, of course, were there and just dormant. Others are totally new. And this is really threatening or delaying that feeling of being part of something bigger. Political parties are playing the political game and it threatens the desire of doing something that is good for you but that is at the same time also good for your children and fellow citizens .

      EA//
Can you stand by your ideals once you reached the common goal of the revolutionaries: the fall of the regime?

      IY//
I think that we need to keep up with this ideals and that we need to progress from that. I’m going to explain this with the role of symbols. When people speak of the French revolution, they speak of the Bastille day. Of course, it has evolved far from that centuries later. But up to now, when people in Paris want to demonstrate, to express some ideas, they march to “la Bastille”. People always feel the need to go back to the origin, to revive that moment, to keep it alive. This is the power of ideals, this is the power of values from which big moments of history are born.
In Tunisia, Mohamed Bouazizi is regarded as the trigger of the revolution. It is not true but he became a symbol and there’s the need for people to reaffirm that idea that we started the revolution because a man, faced to injustice, burnt himself. At the same time, we need to evolve from that. The revolution was a fight for both bread and freedom. The first people who went in the streets demonstrating were the ones jobless. But quickly, the one deprived of freedom joined them. And then others, others and others. And that’s how we eventually won.

      EA//
Isn’t there a need of compromises to build a new political system?

      IY//
Yes, I think it’s very important and I think our political parties are gradually learning the importance of compromise. They are understanding that exclusion doesn’t have a place any longer in the new situation. Exclusion is something that is going to help you for some time and that is going to have the reverse effect and harm you in the first place. So political parties and people who are willing to follow them are learning that a compromise is very much necessary.

      EA//
Is the time of ben Ali very present in the political discourse nowadays? Is the new regime being built in reaction to the past you got rid of? Thus, is it a union against an old model or for a new one?

      IY//
Political parties always refer to that period. And I think keeping in mind what Ben Ali’s regime was like is good. For instance, recently, opposition parties made some political pressure on the ruling parties, the Troika, and they succeeded making them change a few things, especially article one of the Tunisian constitution on whether the law should be inspired by the sharia’a (Islamic law). There was a tendancy of the ruling party Ennhada to make the shari’a the source of the legislation. The opposition made a positive pressure and part of why it succeeded is because they could bring to the imagination of people, to their memories what it was like in the time of Ben Ali if you manipulate the constitution.

      EA//
What is the part played by the youth in this revolution?

      IY//
Ironically, the old regime made 2010 the “Year of the Youth” and it is the year that brought its fall! I think that the system got the youth wrong when it thought it would just put its name on a piece of paper and ignore that creativity, ignore that energy in youth. I hope that the political parties and that the political system will learn that the energy of youth cannot be manipulated easily.
I am very proud of the Tunisian youth. I was born hearing people saying that our generation is hopeless, that there’s nothing to be done out of us… And what I see now is that you should never underestimate this energy and the creativity of the youth. In 2010 particularly, there was an active movement of youth on Facebook and on cyberspace and when we opened this pages, I thought “something is going to happen”.

      EA//
And do you think that this revolution brought a future to the Tunisian youth?

      IY//
Yes, the revolution brought young people a lot of hope and it made them realize that they are part of something bigger. When you carry a baby and you throw it in the air, the baby still laughs because it knows you’re going to catch it and not let it fall. It was the feeling we experienced with the revolution. It is a trust in our fellow citizens. That is something completely new because part of the success of Ben Ali’s system was the fear that it disclosed in the society. The idea was that you couldn’t trust your fellow citizens: you had to trust the system. This is very dangerous.
The question is how to keep this feeling alive. Day after day, I feel it is disappearing. I think it is the role of the civil society to keep it alive. But it is hard for our civil society because it has been dormant for many decades and it has always been told that its role is just to do a bit of charity work. But its task is bigger than that.

Workshop on the “shared activities” with La Pillola and diverserighestudio.

Towards a European Charter of the Commons – Round table

Rifletteremo su quali siano i beni comuni, tra risorse naturali, beni comuni culturali e beni comuni digitali, e su come e perché lottare perché siano comuni.

      7:30 pm – 9:30 pm

A performance of the Strefa WolnoSłowa based on improvisations inspired by F. Kafka’s “America”, in which the fiction alternates with true stories of the participants. It’s a reflection about the migrant’s situation, about continuous search for better world and tragicomedy dimension of journey. The number of participants for this event is limited, please register yourself  beforehand at: info@strefawolnoslowa.pl

Spektakl Tu jest lepiej. Przyjeżdżajcie! to rezultat dwumiesięcznego warsztatu teatralnego zorganizowanego przez fundację Strefa WolnoSłowa w ramach projektu Azyl Warszawa. Próba. Projekt zaangażował do wspólnej pracy twórczej Polaków i cudzoziemców mieszkających w Warszawie.

Fair – Come along and bring some objects you would be willing to trade — you never know what treasures await you at this Fair of exchange, where no money will be used!

Stripove, nakit, knjige, babe i žabe, trange i frange.

    2. Europe: quelles alternatives aux mesures d’austérité?
      2:00 pm – 6:00 pm

Democratic crisis, economic crisis? Which alternative solutions to the measures of austerity? Discussions in workshops with European activists and experts on minimum income, social markets, transnational movements to fight precarity, and the « transition » movement implemented at local scale.

      4. Villes en Transition ? (en français)

    1. The hidden tales of London
      7:00 pm – 9:30 pm

A dinner in the dark where nobody knows when or how, what previously was a restaurant now becomes a stage: a voice starts narrating and you’re thrown into theatrical monologues.

Followed by a talk on the representation of migrants in our society.

You’re having your dinner, relishing delicious meals, listening to thousands of sounds you’ve never paid attention to before and enjoying the unique atmosphere created by darkness; suddenly, nobody knows when or how, what was previously a restaurant, now becomes a stage, a voice starts narrating and you’re thrown into theatrical monologues. Sometimes you walk down the street and you don’t realise that you’re surrounded by tales, hiding behind every gaze you cross, is a long story. Perhaps these gazes belong to people who come from far away places and a long path led them here, in front of you. It’s only an instant, the kind of images you don’t really see, just shadows fading behind the rush of your everyday life.

Many times your eyes can’t really see or they distract your attention from what is real and worth listening to. So let’s try with the darkness, listen to these voices, you know them, they’re part of your life. You’ll be surprised.
When this journey among delicacies and tales will end, don’t leave the restaurant/theatre, perhaps you will be eager to know more about this experience. So open your eyes and join the storytellers and other guests for a pleasant conversation.

The event is organised in partnership with the actor company Ice and Fire.

Registration is required, please contact us if you want to book a sit.

    1. Medzinárodný workshop: Bratislava ako centrum participatívneho rozpočtovania
      9:00 am – 5:00 pm

Workshop and a panel discussion about the experience and models of participative budgeting from different countries. Michal Feik (advisor of the Bratislava city mayor), Peter Nedoroščik (NGO Utopia), Ilona Švihlíková (NGO Alternatíva zdola, Prague). In cooperation with Utopia.

Workshop a panelová diskusia o skúsenostiach a modeloch participatívneho rozpočtovania u nás a vo svete. Michal Feik (poradca primátora mesta Bratislava), Peter Nedoroščik (OZ Utopia), Ilona Švihlíková (OZ Alternatíva zdola, Praha). V spolupráci s OZ Utopia.

Transeuropa festival: Participatívny rozpočet v Európe – medzinárodný workshop a panelová diskusia

V nich si budú vymieňať skúsenosti a diskutovať o problémoch participatívneho rozpočtovania a ich možných riešeniach. Každý účastník bude mať možnosť kedykoľvek prejsť do inej tematickej skupiny.

      Program:

      9:30 – 10:00 prezentácia, úvod

10:00 – 12:00 rozdelenie do tematických skupín a práca v tematických skupinách (konkrétne témy podľa účastníkov)

The project of the Cinémathèque de Tanger was born thanks to the eagerness of a group of artists who wanted to show less known and less projected cinema in Morocco which derived from distant geographical and aesthetic backgrounds.

The program is a selection of short films made before the revolutions that have shaken the Arab world in 2011 and which question the recent history of countries like Lebanon, Tunisia and Morocco through storytelling.

Stories related to underground and political commitment, to terrorism, revolutions and civil wars, told by those who lived these realities and directed by filmmakers of the new generation. These stories remind us our present time, and, at the same time, enables us to reflect on the transmission of political and historical events. The 2011 revolutions have demonstrated the strength of social networks, were the individuals have became narrators and can relate the events through pictures, texts and personal publications, putting literally into question the traditional information mean: the media. The narrator has taken its place in the construction of history, between fiction and reality.

Recent revolutions, enclosed under the category Arab Spring, show the important role that civil society play beyond military and political standard frame.

Films focus on activists’ individual dimension in these rebellions, leading to a sort of revolutions’ autobiography.

      Talk with:

Danielle Arbid: Film Director and Member of the Boards of Advisors of the Cinémathèque de Tanger, Morocco

Khalid Abdalla: Actor, Founder of the Collective Mosireen, Egypt

Yto Baradda: Co-founder and Director of the Cinémathèque de Tanger

Chair: Omar Kholeif: Director of the Arab Film Festival, Liverpool and Curator of FACT, the UK’s centre for film and new media

The talk is meant to carry on with this approach setting up a conversation where speakers from different cultural and geographical context will tackle the topic of how individual dimension affect these mobilization and vice versa, in terms of everyday community and personal life.

In this sense the discussion will examine the role of the citizens’ media production, as video documents and blogs, showing how the single individual represents a more and more powerful source of information and narration that actually shapes the historical course.

      7:00 pm – 10:00 pm

The Cinematèque of Tangier presents Histories, a series of documentaries that tell about the recent arabic revolutions with a post-debate that interrogates on the new forms of political participations and what really means democracy nowadays

Video and photographic installation by different artists that calls into question the proliferation of new geographical and symbolic spaces of borders and boundaries of segregation through a critical analysis on concepts related to migration, city’s borders, detention centres for migrants and spaces of social and ethnic boundaries.

Seeds of democracy: Europe and Balkans
      6:00 pm – 8:30 pm

Since the end of the violent conflicts which dominated the recent history of the Western Balkans, the promotion of peace and stability, and the consolidation of democratic institutions and the rule of law have been a priority for the EU in the region, as a precondition for accession. Disparities in the progress made by individual countries in this regard are evident – while Croatia is set to join the EU in 2013; Serbia, Montenegro and Macedonia enjoy candidate status; and Bosnia and Herzegovina still faces numerous hurdles as it struggles to satisfy EU criteria.  The event, ‘Seeds Of Democracy: Europe and the Balkans’ will bring together academics, politicians, and representatives of civil society from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Serbia to discuss the path of each of these countries towards the EU, including the obstacles they face as they aim to strengthen the role of civil society, ensure the full implementation of the rule of law and consolidate their fledgling democracies.

The event will be divided into two panel discussions looking at the processes needed to realize these objectives, using both a top-down and bottom-up approach. The first panel will include Milica Delevic, who is overseeing the EU integration process of Serbia, and Vanja Calovic, who is leading the battle against corruption in Montenegro. The discussion will outline the key difficulties faced by institutions in the region in their journey towards ensuring good governance, strengthening accountability, transparency, and rule of law.

The second panel will look at the role of civil society organizations in empowering and informing citizens, and strengthening democratic institutions in the region. The panel will include Zdravko Cimbaljevic, founder of the LGBT Forum Progress in Montenegro; and Adam Fagan, Queen Mary Professory and Bosnia and Herzegovina expert.

The main aim of this congress is to raise the question whether the economic crisis is due to speculative behaviours and irrational debt policies or if it is the economic system itself, which favours the financial option rather than investment in human resources and a productive economy. The EU countries are clearly among the first who are suffering such distortions but at the same time they still aren’t confident with EU institutions to make common and shared decisions.

The congress focuses on which dimension is the proper one in order to deal with the economic crisis. Taking UK as the paradigm of “national” solutions the congress seeks to explore how countries with different cultures and historical paths put themselves toward global economic threats.

      The Debates:

Waiting for Godot? EU at the global stage: Threatened by an internal and external economic crisis, EU seems to be far from playing a central role in the conception and the determination of global principles and rules. Since the balance of power has shifted to a multi-polar shape, EU has the chance to influence the global decision making with its culture and tradition of democracy and power sharing.  What would be the position of the main global actors toward a livelier EU?

EU and the Balkans: who needs whom: After twenty years of economic and political reconstruction the Balkan countries are asking themselves which advantages might accession to the EU bring; is the EU still a desirable option for emerging European countries?

The latest solution: financial transaction tax: The UK has recently refused to introduce a financial transaction tax. The city of London, the biggest financial market in Europe, is said to be the ruling subject regarding economic decisions taken in 10 Downing Street. How this affect a common European approach for tighter rules in financial global flows?

Does EU suffer from a democratic deficit? A never-ending contention: The EU decision-making mechanisms are renowned to be complex; several different actors – nominated decision makers, elected politicians and bureaucrats – need to be involved to make a decision. Can European Institutions be considered as adequately accountable and democratic? Are the European institutions ready to tackle the challenges posed by the economic crisis?

Sharing – not only goods, but also skills, information and ideas, all for free – a must for the globalised and monetarized world of the 21st century.

    6. Warsztat: Uczestnik nie konsument / Workshop “Participant not consumer”
      12:00 pm – 3:00 pm

      5:00 pm – 7:00 pm

Diversity on the other side of the Wall: Muslims in Sofia - Red House Center for Culture and Debate

Public concluding session of a workshop held locally for US and Western European professionals in the field of human rights and diversity issues. See English description below

      En

Aiming at reversing the Western-centric perspective of the debate, this workshop brings to Sofia nine Humanity in Action network members. In order to present and comment on different models of coexistence and minority-majority dynamics in the region, the focus will be on the less studied situation of Muslims living on the other side of the Wall, e.g. ethnic Turks and Roma, who have been coexisting with Bulgarians for centuries in different political configurations; the Middle Eastern Diaspora which came in the country during State-Socialism; the recent migrants, attracted to Bulgaria as an outer border of the EU.

Simultaneously, another curious trend will be discussed – while in Western Europe and USA society is anxiously fixating on Muslim communities, in Bulgaria the topic is deliberately ignored. Though according to the latest census data Muslims comprise almost 10% of society, they remain off the radar and the rare mentions they get are quite stereotyped.

Emrah Gökdemir jest tureckim artystą, arabskiego pochodzenia. Eksploruje tajny świat społecznych zależności ukryty na dziedzińcach  wewnętrznych tureckich domów.  Artysta w swoim malarstwie dokumentuje  relacje międzyludzkie i niezaspokojone potrzeby bliskości, potrzeby swobodnej ekspresji, potrzeby wspólnoty w kontekście praw i nakazów tradycyjnej społeczności muzułmańskiej.

O wątpliwościach, o niechęci, autopogardzie, byciu miłośnikiem i wstrząsach metafizycznych w biedzie.

21:00 Maria Porzyc, performans „Podróż do wnętrza ciała”

Wypowiedź o Tobie i sobie. Badanie właściwych proporcji. Badanie czasu, Badanie miejsca. Badanie może być sztuką?

22:00 Piotr Strobel działanie pt. „ZMIANA”

Projekt powstał podczas pobytu Tomasza Foltyna w USA w 2011 roku.

Warsztaty dotyczyć będą sposobów wzmacniania społecznych więzi i wzajemnych oddziaływań,  pracy w zespole, tworzenia sieci komunikacyjnych, skutecznego komunikowania, budowania zespołów i grup wsparcia, a także możliwości praktycznego działania w ramach tzw. trzeciego sektora, czyli organizacjach typu NGO.

Zdobyta wiedza i umiejętności przyczynią się do wzrostu poziomu aktywności społecznej oraz wzmocnienia podstaw społeczeństwa obywatelskiego.

    3. Precariousness: from a social condition to a state of mind
      2:00 pm – 6:30 pm

An interactive event including film screening, workshops and panel debate

“Precarity” is a general term to describe how large parts of the population are being subjected to flexible exploitation or flexploitation (low pay, high blackmailability, intermittent income), and existential precariousness (high risk of social exclusion because of low incomes, welfare cuts, high cost of living). This phenomenon affect young generations above all. What kind of society is going to rise on such a psychological, social and economical ground?

      Agenda

2:00 PM – Presentation of day activities and launch of a video documentary on youth precarity in Europe:

This activity will be organised in collaboration with Giulio Rubino’s project on “precariousness” among young people and will be organised around the screening of his new film (currently being shot in Brixton village, London).

3:00 PM – Precarity on the ground:

Young people from several European country will talk about their national situation concerning economical and social conditions among new generation.

      3:45 PM – Workshops with:

Radical Future, to help the participants learn what unmet needs their peers are facing and how they would like help to tackle them

Social Spaces, to enable participants to learn from groups who are helping support (from uncovering to resourcing) people to use their skills and assets to help tackle unmet needs in a creative way

Visual Camp, to help train people to visualise scenarios for young people’s futures with support by designers and policy makers

During the event we will conduct interviews with participants on the condition of precarity and ambitious initiatives as ways of coping in the current economic climate.

5:00 PM – Public debate with Guy Standing, Susan Nash, Letizia Gambini, Viola Caon and Shiv Malik

The EU is renown as the institution that makes the most important effort to improve mobility of youth in Europe, through programmes like Erasmus for students or Leonardo for interns. However, in the recent years the labour market has evolved with a multiplication of unpaid jobs and a tight compression of the supply of standard and long-term contracts. The most evident consequence is that young professional are nowadays experiencing an increasingly dangerous alienation from the productive life in our society. How can the EU play a role in developing a system where young human resources can be employed and contribute toward the expansion of our continents’ wealth?

    4. Reclaim the city – Odzyskać miasto. Wydarzenie z udziałem Teatro Valle / Action in the city: “Reclaim the city – Odzyskać miasto”
      2:00 pm – 5:00 pm

    1. Human Library
      12:00 pm – 3:00 pm

For the second year in a row, Cardiff University is participating into the Transeuropa Festival!

This year, the School of European Languages, Translation and Politics is setting up a ‘Human Library’ with representatives from Cardiff migrants and minority communities.

A human library is organised like a real library: there are books, readers, librarians, and a catalogue of titles. But here the books are persons, real persons who are ready to tell their lives in a dialogue (20 to 30 minutes) with readers.

The books in a living library are characterised by experiences of being part of a minority group and of discrimination. The motto of the human library project is: ‘Don’t judge a book by its cover!’ Through personal encounters, readers overcome their own prejudices and stop thinking in terms of categories, focusing instead on subjective life paths and life stories.

    1. Agorà Transeuropa (all-day)
      giu 2 – giu 3

Too often we have been told that “there are no alternatives” to austerity policies that have been inflicted on citizens across Europe. We believe that there are alternatives and that citizens across Europe are leading common struggles that could make up a concrete alternative idea of Europe. The Agorà Transeuropa will gather experiences of an alternative Europe, to start building the ABC of a cultural and political programme for a continent that wants to  come back to life starting from its people, not its banks.
