Associazione Gamaka operates at a national level in the field of production, research, training and promotion of the performing arts, with a specific focus on the performing arts of India.
Gamaka stands out for its commitment to promoting artistic and intercultural dialogue through international productions and festivals hosting artists from India and Europe.
Through production residencies, research/training, and community-based audience engagement practices, Gamaka explores the relationships between the performing arts and interculturality .
Networking between international artists not only nurtures the contemporary art scene, but also enriches individual and collective identities, carving out spaces for dialogue and opening up the possibility of new forms of expression.
Gamaka intends to stimulate reflection on the hybridisation of languages and the sustainability of artistic practices originating in ‘other’ cultural contexts by emphasising the dynamism and evolution of the performing arts.
Its practice does not merely enhance Indian performance traditions, but reinterprets them in a contemporary context, highlighting their current relevance in global cultural interactions.
Through events, performances, lectures, workshops and open laboratories, Gamaka connects different artistic communities, fostering encounters between artists and audiences and encouraging a participatory approach.
In short, Gamaka proposes itself not only as a promoter of the performing arts, but also as a catalyst for intercultural dialogue that celebrates the richness of the plural identities of the contemporary scene
Research and continuous training can guarantee the sustainability and renewal of artistic practices. Gamaka is dedicated with passion and commitment to the training of students, practitioners and artists, through a multidisciplinary approach and an articulated training proposal. Gamaka organises courses, workshops, conferences, and advanced training seminars with expert teachers and guest masters in the following disciplines: 1) Indian dance-theatre – bharatanatyam, kathak, odissi, kuchipudi; 2) Indian classical music – dhrupad and Carnatic singing; 3) yoga and kalaripayattu – martial arts.
With the intention of strengthening and expanding these lines of action, Gamaka aims to expand its network of collaborations with cultural institutions, universities and associations, further promoting the dissemination of contemporary Indian performing arts in the European and international context.
From 2021-2015 Gamaka has promoted the Natyakala Festival, a performing arts event presented annually in Venice with the participation of internationally renowned artists, which has obtained the support and patronage of important cultural institutions.
