Transeuropa is the first transnational festival in Europe. It began on 25 April and runs until 10 May, around Europe Day, taking place simultaneously in London, Paris, Bologna, and Cluj-Napoca. Combining a cultural and artistic festival with a political event, it was conceived and organised by European Alternatives in partnership with the Allianz Kulturstiftung, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon, the European Parliament, the European Commission, and numerous local organisations in each of the four host cities.
All events are free and open to the public. The programme addresses issues such as urban poverty, migrants’ rights, the Bologna Process, feminism, and democracy, bringing together urban walks, film screenings, theatre performances, public debates, and artistic interventions. Each festival city focuses on a specific theme: London explores Europe and Democracy; Paris, Europe and the Rest of the World; Cluj-Napoca, Cultural Diversity; and Bologna, European Mobility.
Among the confirmed guests are the renowned sociologist Saskia Sassen; feminist scholar and former Member of the European Parliament Geneviève Fraisse; philosopher Michela Marzano; historian Donald Sassoon; and sinologist François Jullien. The programme also features Austrian artist Oliver Ressler, whose film What Is Democracy? is screened in all four festival cities, alongside a special event with the artist at Tate Britain on 7 May.
In addition, each city hosts a flagship forum dedicated to its central theme: the Europe and China Conference (Paris, Petit Palais, 30 April); the Europe and Democracy Forum (London, Toynbee Hall, 9 May, Europe Day); the Cultural Diversity Forum (Cluj-Napoca, 30 April–2 May); and the Bologna Process and University Reforms Forum (Bologna, 6–7 May).
