Towers of Winds Workshop

Workshops & walks. With Jon Goodbun.

Towers of Winds is an environmental architecture research project, exploring new design possibilities for passive downdraft evaporative cooling devices in Athens. These experiments provide zero-enegy cooling and air movement at the scale of individual buildings and urban spaces, and can contribute to climate adaptation in increasingly hot cities.

Bucolic gathering around Folly for Songs for FUNK Kinships: A Pollinator for Other Futures

Workshops & walks. With Jenny Marketou.

Above me, the clouds are moving. They have no fixed shape. They gather, dissolve, become something else. Perhaps this is what clouds do. I watch them changing while birds continue their conversations and insects move between flowers. A breeze passes over the grass and across my body. I think about Anna Tsing and her writing about life in the ruins of capitalism. What stays with me is her attention to unexpected collaborations—to the ways life persists, adapts and creates relationships in damaged landscapes. We often imagine ecological crisis as the end of something. But perhaps crisis is also a condition in which new forms of relation become visible. The garden is not outside the crisis. The traffic is here. Pollution is here. Climate instability is here. The histories of extraction that have shaped our present are here.

And yet life continues. A flower opens. An insect arrives.

Gather in the garden of the Athens Concert Hall for the concert of nature, meet and exchange with the artist Jenny Marketou around the installation Folly for Songs for FUNK Kinships: A Pollinator for Other Futures.

From the Arizona desert to the Mediterranean sea, suffering is clinically managed while control is packaged as security. But if there is no opting out, who is The Sandbox really protecting?
The film will be followed by a panel discussion with Lydia Emmanouilidou, co-editor in chief at SOLOMON, and other experts.

Welcoming and Qi Gong: Dragon Workshop

Workshops & walks. With Joulia Strauss.

Avtonomi Akadimia, an Open Air University

The day opens with breathing in the ecofeminist power of a Dragon. A Dragon, who either no longer exists, or does not yet exist, in the physically perceivable world, lives in the ether — αἰθήρ — in the “upper air,” or in the “fire air”: the element beyond the four elements, closest to air. The Dragon moves among the clouds, gladly escaping all neurotypicalities*, and teaches us to perceive the catastrophes of our time as a process. The Dragon trusts what it cannot yet see. We will become this Dragon by breathing the air of political healing: Vietnamese Qi Gong.

* the term used by the philosopher Báyò Akómoláfé while speaking of the monsters in positive light: according to him, the monster is every way that neurotypicality tries to adjust for the edges, all the ways it tries to capture something that doesn’t quite fit in into its linguistic frameworks

Re-indigenizing the Future: Imagining Beyond the Anthropocene

Workshops & walks. With Yasmine Amal.

Avtonomi Akadimia, an Open Air University

Hyper-individualism and techno-humanist imaginaries have intensified a global race toward futures defined by Euro-Western ideas of progress, human mastery and technological transcendence, raising questions about whose values shape the worlds we are building. How might we imagine a future in which modernity is no longer the unquestioned horizon of human development? Where we move beyond euro-patriarchal knowledge systems? A future grounded in the idea of the world as a living soul?

Come ready to dream, reflect, and create.

Archival Ghosts – Feminist & Migration movement archive

A workshop for the ephemeral, the ever-moving, the endlessly transforming, colourful, elusive, and never merely alone: an archive made of clouds that can change the climate. One we will create by seeking out the stories that were left out -migrant, women’s, queer stories- and by deciding that everything that remained over, everything that was left behind, is our material.

What stories would we tell, and in what ways, if we listened to the subaltern? What language do ghosts speak, and might they, after all, keep us company?

Northern Forest: discussion & film screening

Film screenings & exhibitions. With Julia Lazarus, Onur Akgül.

Avtonomi Akadimia, an Open Air University

By Julia Lazarus.

North of Istanbul the formerly remote rural areas at the Black Sea are transformed by gigantic infrastructure projects. A new motorway ring cuts through the forests, separating pastures from farmland. The residents are  presented with a  fait accompli, their villages are turned into city suburbs. And as a result, all agricultural activities will become illegal within  a time span of 5 years. With the 3rd bridge and the new major  airport hub complete, the construction of the Istanbul Canal is about to begin. The Turkish activist group Kuzey Ormanları  Savunması organizes civil resistance against the destruction of  the livelihoods affecting both urban and rural populations alike.

Facing the anger and disappointment expressed by residents at countless local grassroots meetings, the group is working to establish shared goals among the people. The camera stays close to the group throughout the film and follows their small victories and many setbacks, while they discuss their ideas and notions of a possible common future.

Migrant Youth Political Participation Training

We believe in meaningful political participation of refugees, migrants and people of migrant backgrounds. This training for young people under the age of 30 is about how to use the avenues for participation that are already available, and how we can work together to expand political rights for everyone living in our countries. It will build on different experiences of political activism in different parts of Europe, ranging from campaigning and protest to running for election.

This training is organised together with Greek Forum of Refugees and open to all on registration (limited number of places).

Digital Borders: a citizens assembly on Migration, border control and new technologies

Migration control globally is increasingly trialing AI-enhanced policing technologies which are elsewhere illegal, from surveillance in frontiers to ICE facial tracking. In the 7th assembly of the Digital Democratic Commons, we will question how digital infrastructure has created borders instead of connections in both online & physical realities – and how we can reimagine a real world wide web.

Children activities available throughout the day and side workshops.

Nephele: Clouds, Care, Democracy

Panel debates & assemblies. With Elke Krasny.

Nephele: Clouds, Care, Democracy takes as its point of departure the elusive figure of Nephele, the cloud nymph of Greek mythology whose fleeting appearances remain peripheral to canonical narratives and dominant political imaginaries. Atmospheric, transient, and resistant to stable embodiment, Nephele offers a lens through which to rethink ecological relations, the politics of care, and democratic life in an age of climate catastrophe and digital mediation.

The Far-Right’s Attack on Gender and LGBTQI Rights and the Need for an intersectional Feminist Response

Around the world as in Europe, the far-right and their nationalist and fascist project, are targeting LGBTQIA+ and women rights as a scapegoat to justify and enforce a need for an authoritarian society protecting their wealth and power. This scapegoating strategy at large in fact targets all kinds of people already vulnerable and or marginalized in society, notably racialised people. It seems crucial at the moment to understand these dynamics and attacks as part of the same political project to ensure a common and intersectional response.
